One of the major problems plaguing the widely used technique of PCR is contamination of reagents with previously amplified material. Extreme care is essential in the routine handling of samples prior to amplification. In particular exacting efforts are required if PCR from single cells or with random primers is to be performed.

To prevent carry-over of amplified DNA sequences, samples should be prepared in a clean room, using a separate set of supplies, and pipetting devices dedicated for the specific use of setting up reactions. The Herolab CleneCab provides a low cost alternative to a clean room, offering an isolated, dead-air work space. With the use of powerful UV lights, Nucleic Acids can be efficiently degraded making them unsuitable for subsequent amplification, thus eliminating the danger of contamination between samples.

Only 5 to 30 minutes exposure of UV lights to the working surface with optimised UV irradiation is sufficient to reduce or completely eliminate the problem of sample contamination. The powerful UV intensity (4.200 mW measured at 30 cm) reduces the decontamination time to an absolute minimum. A built-in timer allows the user control of the UV doses and prevents unnecessary exposure. The UV light is cut off when the doors are opened. The CleneCabs 8 mm** high density acrylic glass construction also offers the user ideal shielding when working with other hazardous materials such as radioactive labeling of DNA with 32P. (**According to the Chart of the Nuclides, Atomic Energy Research Centre Karlsruhe, approx. 7 mm acrylic glass with a density of 1.18 g/cm3 is sufficient to shield 32P).
