Following a 9.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, a massive tsunami and tremors struck Indonesia and southern Thailand Lanka on 26th December 2004, killing over 104,000 people in Indonesia and over 5,000 in Thailand. In the aftermath of the disaster, Tsunami First Relief Fund provided food and water for 2500 people. In march they provided a blueprint for a Tsunami proof house, with the help of ARUP. In Male they met children with an extreme iron deficiency that will die by the age of 8 or 10. The Tsunami First Relief Fund learnt that it is a genetic disease that affects 20% of the the population as carriers of the disease and 1 in 100 children will die from it. The main way to combat this cruel disease, Thalassaemia, is with population wide screening tests. Blood samples are collected from 200 islands and the testing is performed in the capital by a non government organisation called SHE. Unfortunately the Tsunami has destroyed the previous boats and part of the laboratories of SHE and the Tsunami First Relief Fund would like to restore them. They are trying to equip the local NGO laboratories and provide two floating laboratory boats which will be used to diagnose Thalassemia and therefore save thousands of lives. The population is too spread out for all medical services to be made available on all islands (200 islands x X-ray machines, ultrasound machines etc + trained staff to use them). With some of the islands having a population of less than 200 it is even too spread out to warrant full the time services of medical personnel on each island, this is simply not economical. The best answer is a mobile service. Another possibility is to try and consolidate the population, although, this is not something to be undertaken lightly nor will it happen over night. Below is a list of essential medical equipment needed for SHE to deliver the service they aspire to. This list was compiled with the help of the Tsunami First Relief Funds medical team including the family-planning members, doctors, counsellors, Patrons and their CEO. If anybody can assist the Tsunami First Relief Fund by donating any of the laboratory equipment below then please contact the Tsunami First Relief Fund directly. |
